LUCAS, Alfred Perry.
Amateur.
Born at Westminster, London, 20th February 1857.
Died at Great Waltham, Essex, 12th October 1923.
The son of Orton Lucas, of Loseberry, Esher, solicitor, he was educated at Uppingham, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1873-74. He played his first match for Surrey in 1874 and between then and 1907 played in 256 first-class matches, including 41 for Surrey, 11 for Middlesex and 98 for Essex, plus five Test matches. He toured Australia 1878-79. He went up to Clare College, Cambridge, and played cricket for the University 1875-78. He took his B.A. in 1878 and went onto the London Stock Exchange, becoming a member of the firm of Booth Brothers. His cousin C. F. Lucas played 14 matches for Hampshire 1864-80.
During the 1881 Census he was resident with his parents at Loseberry, Thames Ditton, Surrey. His father Orton was aged 72, a solicitor and his mother Mary Rachel aged 66. His unmarried sister Fanny Margaret is aged 26 and he is shown as a member of the London Stock Exchange aged 24. Captain Francis Sharp of the Light Infantry, aged 38, his wife Elsey Mary aged 29 and their two year old son Douglas are visitors and there are seven domestic servants.
