PEAKE, Edward.
Amateur.
Born at Tideham, Monmouthshire, 29th March 1860.
Died at Huntingdon, 3rd January 1945.
The son of R.Peake of Chepstow, he was educated at Marlborough College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1878-79, being captain in 1879. He went up to Oriel College, Oxford, playing cricket for the University 1880-83 and winning his blue 1881-83. He also won a blue for athletics and played rugby for Wales v England in 1881. He played in 46 first-class cricket matches in all 1880-89, 26 of them for Gloucestershire. He also played for Berkshire 1898-1906. He became an assistant master at the Southbourne and Clifton private schools and later at Clifton College. He was assistant master at Giggleswick School, Yorkshire, 1885-96, then headmaster of the junior school at Bradfield College 1896-1909. In 1909 he became headmaster of the Cathedral Choir School at Oxford and chaplain of Christ Church, Oxford. In 1921 he became rector of Bluntisham, Huntingdon.
In the 1881 Census he is shown living at Oakgrove House, Chepstow, Monmouth, with his mother, Gertrude E., aged 53, a widow with dividend income. He is aged 21, an undergraduate of Oxford University. Also present id his older brother Richard, aged 23, a solicitor and five unmarried sisters, Gretrude aged 22, Mabel aged 19, Florence aged 17, Gwendolin aged 15 and Margaret E. aged 12. There are three domestic servants.
