Courtesy an uncharacteristic 60 off 57 deliveries and handy twenties from the willow of Suresh Raina (20), S. Badrinath (22) and skipper MS Dhoni (23), Chennai Super Kings handed Mumbai Indians a crashing defeat by seven wickets at Port Elizabeth. With the result two things turned certain. Mumbai Indians have now crashed out of the Indian Premier League second edition and Chennai Super Kings have almost made their place in the top four a certainty.

 

Chasing 148 to win, the Chennai Super Kings got off to the worst possible start, losing comeback man Parthiv Patel to the first ball of the innings. He was found plumb in front of his wickets to another Malinga slinger. Rania walked in to bat and in swashbuckling fashion scored 20 off 12 deliveries. All his runs came off boundaries as he hit two boundaries and two sixes before trying to hit Bravo for his third one. The ball went high in the air and Bravo did an Usain Bolt act to reach the ball at short square leg and take the catch himself.

 

All this while Matthew Hayden was surprisingly very quiet. He looked a man on a mission today. Believe it or not but his first boundary came off the 34th delivery he faced but whatever said and done, he made sure Chennai was pushed past the victory line. After Raina's fall Haydos added 40 with Badrinath and then 87 with the skipper to go past the win line.

 

It was not that Mumbai Indians did not have their moments. In fact the Chennai side needed 92 off of the last 10 overs which always was a difficult job at hand and meant that Mumbai bowlers did bowl well in the first half. But here on some surprising bowling changes by Sachin tendulkar at crucial stages turned out to be expensive. He kept bowling Dhawal Kulkarni though the bowler was being taken for some nasty treatment by the batsman. He went for 45 runs of his 4 overs and bowled out even though Harbhajan and Duminy had overs intact.

 

Earlier and unchanged Mumbai Indians, needing to win both their remaining matches to make it to the semi-finals, chose to bat first on a dry-looking pitch that had the semblance of being one that would assist the spinners. With the help of JP Duminy's (62) fifth half-century of the Indian Premier League and also his highest score in the tournament, Mumbai went on to post a competitive 147 losing five wickets. He was well aided by another good knock by Abhishek Nayar who hit a quickie 33 from 27 deliveries which included hitting two balls over the fence.

 

Dwayne Bravo (5), playing his last last game for Mumbai Indians before going back for national duty came in to open the batting once again with a new opening partner, this time with old pro Sanath Jayasuriya. This hardly made a difference as the West Indian was skittled by a wonderful yorker by Albie Morkel in the third over with just seven on the board for the batting side.

 

Man in form Duminy walked in to bat alongside Sanath Jayasuriya who looked destructive for a brief while. He hit a whirlwind 30 off just 17 deliveries and the knock was aided with three hits to the fence and two over it. Just when it looked that he would take the game away from the opposition, he got a bit too adventurous and after having already hit Suddep Tyagi for 14 runs in the sixth over went for another heave, ending up only scooping a simple one for Raina to take it.

 

Suresh Raina sent back skipper Sachin Tendulkar cheaply for just 11 runs. Tendulkar looked to slog sweep him over the mid-wicket fielder but only managed to find Balaji who took a good catch at the fence.

 

Then Abhishek Nayar joined Duminy on the wicket and the duo went about the task sensibly to start off. The pair added 31 runs between the time Sachin got out in the 11th over and the sixteenth over but with the score reading 105 for the loss of just three wickets at the end of the sixteenth over they went for an all-out assault and though Balaji bowled a magnificent 19th over where-in he gave away only 5 runs, the Mumbai Indians still did reach a competitive total.
