South Division

 

In yet another failure for the Surrey team, Kent defeated them by 16 runs to keep piling on them misery after misery on a campaign that had gone haywire from the start. Electing to bat first substantial scores from Martin van Jaarsveld and Geraint Jones led the team to a defendable total of 184 in their stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Surrey was never able to get on top of an accurate bowling display from Kent bowlers as nobody scored more than 30. Ryan McLaren took four vital Surrey wickets to freeze the chase from Surrey batsmen. Surrey finally finished with 168 in their 20 overs.

 

Another batting failure caused Middlesex to score a below-par of 127 in their 20 overs. The bowling attack of Sussex was not of explosive proportions but they were in the restrictive mode as they bowled full, straight and tight to deny the Middlesex batsmen any scoring opportunities. Yasir Arafat, Luke Wright and James Kirtley took two wickets each to keep Middlesex to 127 for 8. Sussex also began their chase badly, losing three wickets for 28 runs but Dwayne Smith, Ed Joyce, who top-scored with 41, and Chris Nash chipped in to reach the target with an over to spare.

 

A six wicket win over a listless Essex ensured that Hampshire qualified for the quarter-finals. It was on the back of an all-round performance from Sean Ervine that helped Hampshire to first restrict Essex to a gettable total of 149 and then provided the finishing touches to the chase. Essex was rocked by two early wickets as Dimitri Mascarenhas gave Hampshire a strong start by dismissing Essex's openers and then Ervine who took three middle-order wickets for 26. Hampshire had slipped to 87 for 4 when Ervine began his innings. He stayed unbeaten, scoring 39 off 22 balls with three sixes, and Mascarenhas also chipped in with 27 as Hampshire won with five balls to spare.

 

Midlands, Wales, West Division

 

A dead match in the group produced a listless encounter between the two lowly placed opponents in the table. Gloucestershire scored a par score of 148 in their 20 overs and the chief architects of this score were David Brown and James Franklin. The Glamorgan top order repaid the favour by misfiring as they slipped to 54 for 4 but then Wright and Maynard led them across the line.

 

The former South African internationals shared six wickets as they succeeded in restricting Worcestershire to a lowly total of 109 in their 20 overs. Worcestershire had won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting surface. Johan van der Wath struck the first blow, bowling Vikram Solanki for 5, before Hall and Nicky Boje increased pressure on Worcestershire by bowling economically. Hall struck vital blows as well, taking 4 for 19, while Boje picked up 1 for 16 to restrict Worcestershire to only 109 for 9. Northamptonshire lost one opener early but the other, Peters, remained unbeaten on 61 off 52 balls to finish the match with 2 overs to spare.

 

In a thrilling game, where neither of the teams could lay claim to the fact that they dominated the match from the start to the finish, Warwickshire held their nerve to clinch a thriller by one run against Somerset at Edgbaston. Jim Troughton, who scored 62 and Jonathan Trott, added 89 for the second wicket for Warwickshire after which Rikki Clarke boosted the innings to 193 for 6 with an unbeaten 51 off 32 balls. Somerset chased manfully, with all of their top-order batsmen getting starts. Eventually Ben Phillips was run out while attempting the run to tie the game and Somerset finished on 192 for 7.

 

North Division

 

In a must win game for Durham for qualifying for the quarter finals, Durham defeated Leicestershire by six wickets. Leicestershire would have also progressed had they won, did not score enough after winning the toss and were restricted to 133 for 8 in 20 overs. Boeta Dippenaar attempted to hold the innings together with 63 off 48 balls but received no support from his team-mates. Chasing a modest target, Durham were given an explosive start by David Warner who hammered his way to 44 off 18 balls, an innings which included five fours and three sixes. His opening partner Phil Mustard provided valuable support, scoring 27 off 28, and their stand of 75 all but secured the game.

 

With a massive win over Nottinghamshire Lancashire finished at the top of the table. Chasing a fairly difficult total of 173 in their 20 overs, Laxman with his elegance and Croft with his brutality, shut Nottinghamshire out of the match. Lancashire reached the target with two overs to spare. Nottinghamshire weren't nearly as forceful when they batted, relying on a half-century from David Hussey to get up to 173 for 7 after the top order failed to fire. Croft was useful for Lancashire with the ball as well, taking 2 for 35 while Sajid Mahmood picked up 2 for 26.

 

Derbyshire beat Yorkshire by 37 runs to win the clash between the two bottom-placed teams in the division. Derbyshire made a shaky start after getting sent in, losing four wickets for 74 runs, before Wavell Hinds and Garry Park revived themas they steered their team to 164 for 5 after 20 overs. Yorkshire's openers made a steady start adding 42 before the innings collapsed. Offspinner Jake Needham dismissed Jacques Rudolph and Adam Lyth with the score on 68 and struck twice more to finish with figures of 4 for 21. Yorkshire slipped to 94 for 7 and were eventually dismissed for 127.
