David Taylor was the first Twenty20 specialist imported from league cricket to the ranks of the county game. In his first game for Worcestershire (in the very first round of Twenty/20 matches in England) he hammered a 20 ball, 10 boundary innings of 46 while opening, a knock which won him the man of the match award. However, he never got close to scaling those heights again in that season. However, 12 months later Derbyshire coach David Houghton gave Taylor a contract for limited-overs games in the second half of Derbyshires 2004 season. Houghton had fond memories of their time together in league cricket, where he had seen Taylors brutal length hitting work to murderous effect. However, Taylor again found county attacks harder to bully, and it was after a very sensible innings (a 45 ball innings of 29 to hold a crumbling Derbyshire innings together against Middlesex at Southgate) that Houghton decided to dispense with Taylors services, saying he had signed him to be a batsman who provided fireworks rather than polyfilla.
