Event:Bangladesh in South Africa 2008/09

DateLine: 20th November 2008

Resuming on their overnight score of 299/1, South Africa collapsed to 441/9 before declaring their inning. However, it proved to be quite a substantial total as the tourists succumbed to the four pronged pace attack of the South Africans and were bowled out for 153 in their first inning. Trailing by 288 runs, and following on, the Bangladeshis had reached 20/1 at the end of the second day’s play.

The first wicket to fall for the hosts was Hashim Amla, who was bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza. Graeme Smith departed in the very next over to Shakib Al Hasan, and after that, the South African wickets fell at regular intervals. Ashley Prince was the only other batsman – apart from the two century scorers, Amla and Smith – to get to a fifty, as Shakib picked up five wickets. Incidentally, he had scalped seven wickets in an inning in a recent test match against New Zealand.

However, in reply, the Bangladeshis found the pitch too hot to handle, and lost wickets in a continuous stream. Skipper Mohammad Ashraful disappointed yet again, and the only piece of resistance came from the wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim, who hit a 48 before being adjudged LBW off Jacques Kallis. Makhaya Ntini picked up three.

Following on, Dale Steyn bowled the debutant Imrul Kayes for four, before the stumps were drawn, and the tourists ended with 20/1. Still needing 268 runs to make the home team bat again, Bangladesh would need to bat much better in their second essay to make a match out of it.
