The fixture was arranged some time after the official list of County matches for the year was drawn up at Lord's and it is presumed that the officials of the Marylebone Cricket Club forgot to appoint the umpires, the captains appointing two from the Old Trafford groundstaff, E Holland and A Paul, for the first day.
