Player: | HR Bromley-Davenport |
Hugh Bromley-Davenport cricketing abilities drew attention whilst at Eton when he was described as the best Public school bowler of 1887. Following the well-worn path from Eton to Cambridge, he took 5/11 in his second University match, and later appeared for his native Cheshire. He later appeared in first-class cricket for Middlesex. But never played with any regularity. He bowled fast left-arm, and made useful runs in the tail. He toured the West Indies in 1894/95 and 1897, and then made his Test debut in South Africa in 1895/96. Opening the bowling with Lohmann, he took one wicket in the second innings, whilst his partner took a remarkable 8 for 7. He didn't take a wicket in the Second Test, but made a fine 84 batting at number 9. He played one more Test on this tour, and his final Test three years later when he toured South Africa again. He made 4 and 0, and was not asked to bowl.
He served in the Royal Engineers in the First World War (he was 44 when it started), earning the OBE for his services.
