Winston Place made his debut for Lancashire before the Second World War, but made little impression at the time. His batting in 1946, then, was a revelation, when he established himself as a solid opening partner for Washbrook. His best year was 1947, when he made nine centuries, his highest score of 266*, over 2,500 runs and averaged over 60. A strong driver, and excellent player of spin bowling, he was picked to tour the West Indies in 1947/48. He played in three Tests there, making an excellent century in what was to prove to be his final Test innings. We toured India with a Commonwealth XI in 1949/50, and continued to prosper on the county scene, making 1,000 runs in a season eight times in all. On retirement he became a first-class umpire, but stood at that level in just one season.
