EMMETT, Thomas.
Professional.
Born at Crib Lane, Halifax, Yorkshire, 3rd September 1841.
Died at Leicester, 30th June 1904.
He played his early cricket with the Illingworth Club, taking up his first professional engagement at Halifax followed by three years at Keighley. He played his first game for Yorkshire in 1866 and in a long first-class career he played 426 first-class matches, including 298 for Yorkshire and seven Test Matches. He toured Australia three times and North America once. He captained Yorkshire 1878-82, and played on until 1888. He was engaged as a professional at Middlesborough in the 1870s. He coached at Stonyhurst College and later for a long spell at Rugby, also acting as groundsman at Rugby. He later coached at Leicester, where he lived with his son, Arthur, who appeared for Leicestershire in 1902.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 21 Albert Street, Keighley, Yorkshire, aged 39, a professional cricketer. His wife Grace was aged 36, and his four daughters, Clara aged 17, Frances A. aged 7, Evelyn aged 5 and Edith aged 2, and his two sons Arthur aged 12 and Albert aged 9. Albert, Frances and Evelyn were all born at Middlesborough.
