EVANS, Alfred Henry.
Amateur.
Born at Madras, India, 14th June 1858.
Died at Saunton, Devon, 26th March 1934.
The son of Deputy-Surgeon-General Evans, M.D., of Bath, formerly Inspector-General of Hospitals, Madras. He was at first educated at Rossall School, where he appeared in the cricket eleven in 1874. In that year he left Rossall for Clifton College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1875-77, and was captain in 1877. He went up to Oriel College, Oxford, where he was in the cricket eleven, gaining his blue in four years and captain in 1881. He also gained his rugby blue in three years and was captain in 1879. He played in first-class matches for Somerset and Hampshire. In 1881 he gained his B.A. (1st Class Mods, 3rd Lit.Hum.). From January 1882 until April 1888 he was an assistant master at Winchester College. He became headmaster of a preparatory school at Horris Hill, Newtown, Newbury, Berkshire 1888-1920. in 1923 he was living at Redlayne, Shawford, Winchester.
He does not appear in the 1881 Census.
