HEATH, Arthur Howard.
Amateur.
Born at Titterton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, 29th May 1856.
Died at Marylebone, London, 24th April 1930.
The son of R. Heath, of Biddulph Grange, Congleton, he was educated at Clifton College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven. He went up to Trinity College, Oxford, where he played for the University cricket eleven 1876-79, winning his blue all four years, He also played rugby football for the University 1875, 1877, 1879-80, winning his blue four times and playing for England v Scotland in 1876. In all he played in 44 first-class matches, including six for Gloucestershire and two for Middlesex, although most of his county cricket was played for Staffordshire where he was for a time captain and hon secretary. He also played for Cheshire in 1892. He was a J.P. for Staffordshire and a Lieutenant-Colonel of Staffordshire Imperial Yeomanry. He stood for Parliament in the Hanley Division, unsuccessfully in 1892 and 1895, but was elected 1900-06, and was elected for Leek in 1910. During the First World War he served as a staff Lieutenant-Colonel and was mentioned-in-despatches. In 1905 he was resident at Newbold Revel, Rugby, and in 1925 at Street Ashton Lodge, Rugby. He was a colliery proprietor and ironmaster.
The 1881 Census finds him at his fathers residence at Biddulph Grange, Biddulph, Staffordshire, aged 24, also present is his elder brother James aged 29, both are unmarried and ironmasters. Two unmarried sisters are also there, Anne aged 35 and Florence Gertrude aged 19. There is a housekeeper, cook, two footmen and four maids.
