KAYE, James Levett.
Amateur.
Born at Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, 27th December 1861.
Died at Chelsea, London, 17th November 1917.
He was the son of James Kaye, barrister of Lincolns Inn and The Wilderness, Pinner. He was educated at the Rev. C. Fendalls school at Windlesham and Winchester College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1878-80, being captain in the last year. In 1881 he played his only first-class match, for Hampshire. His brother Dr.H.W. played in three matches for Middlesex in 1900. He went on to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and joined the 1st Berkshire Regiment, serving with them in the Sudan Campaign of 1884. In 1885 he was transferred to the Indian Army and became a lieutenant in Bengal Staff Corps. He joined the 1st Central India Horse and was promoted to Captain, Major in 1901. He then transferred to the Political Service and became Settlement Commissioner at Jammu and Kashmir, and later Resident at Alwar and Mewar. He returned to England in 1916 and served for a few months in the Censors Office.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was, aged 19, living with his father, James Kaye, a widower aged 49, barrister in actual practice, together with his brothers Walter T., aged 20 an Oxford undergraduate, Levith M. aged 12, and sisters Elizabeth I.E. aged 13 and Margaret A.G. aged 10. There is a visitor, Frederick D. Thornton, a 18 year old Midshipman in the Royal Navy. There are three domestic servants.
