LOCKWOOD, Ephraim.

Born at Lascelles Hall, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, 4th April 1845.
Died at Tandem, Lascelles Hall, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, 19th December 1921.
He was a son of Charles Lockwood, of Lascelles Hall, a fancy woollen weaver. A nephew of John Thewlis (Yorkshire 1862-75) he and his brother Henry (Yorkshire 1877-82) were related to the Eastwood, Bates and Thewlis families, who also lived at Lescelles Hall. He was a loom weaver, he first went out as a professional with Kirkburton in 1864 and was with Meltham Mills and Lockwood before being engaged by Cheetham Hill, Manchester in 1868. This was the year that he was first tried by Yorkshire and between then and 1884 he played in 328 first-class matches, 213 of them for Yorkshire and captained his county in 1876 and 1877. He toured North America in 1879. Among his other engagements during this time he was with Manchester for two years, the St Johns Club, Huddersfield and Bury, Lancashire. For a period of about ten years from 1885 he ran a sports outfitting shop at 18 West Parade, Huddersfied.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living by himself at Common End, Lepton, Yorkshire, aged 35, a woollen weaver and professional cricketer.
