McCORMICK, Edward James.
Amateur.
Born at Hastings, Sussex, 1st November 1862.
Died at Templemore, Co Tipperary, Ireland, 31st December 1941.
The son of George McCormick, a Scottish lodging house keeper in Hastings, he was educated in Hastings and learnt his cricket on the local recreation ground before gravitation to the Hastings & St Leonards Cricket Club. In 1880 he was one of three local players included by Sussex when they played at Hastings and this proved to be the first of fifty first-class matches he played in between then and 1890, including 46 for Sussex. He was a banker and the pressures of business prevented him from playing other than at the time of his annual holiday.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was an 18 year old bank clerk, still living at home at 1 Station Road, Hastings, Sussex. His father was George, aged 52 born Scotland, a keeper of lodging houses and his mother Mary A. aged 50. His brother George, aged 25 was also a bank clerk and his sister, aged 23 a confectioners assistant. There is one boarder, Charles J. Cook a 20 year old watchmaker, born in Hastings.
