Brief profile of Jimmy Stone
by Dr.A.K.Hignell

Player:J Stone

Jimmy Stone has a special place in Glamorgan`s record books as in 1923 Stone recorded their first ever century against a touring team. The wicket-keeper reached this landmark with 108 against the West Indian tourists at Cardiff Arms Park, and all at the age of 46! His innings also formed a partnership of 136 in an hour and a half with Frank Pinch, and their stand laid the foundation for a 43 run victory for the Glamorgan side.

Stone had spent fifteen years on the Hampshire staff, during which time he passed a thousand runs on three occasions. He had also claimed over 300 dismissals in 274 first-class appearances for Hampshire between 1900 and 1914.

After the Great War, Stone moved to South Wales and joined the Briton Ferry Town club. At the time, Glamorgan lacked the services of a regular wicket-keeper, and in their inaugural season in the County Championship, they had used a variety of amateurs and occasional keepers. After qualifying by residence, Stone became a regular in the Glamorgan side after making his debut in 1922, until retiring in 1924.

He subsequently remained in the county game, standing as an umpire in first-class cricket from 1925 until 1934.
