With 142 first-class wickets to his name for Glamorgan between 1982 and 1984, Winston Davis had a short but successful career with Glamorgan. At the end of 1984 the county`s committee had the difficult decision of choosing between Davis` raw pace or the brilliant batting of Javed Miandad. They opted for the Pakistani maestro, and Davis subsequently played for Northamptonshire between 1987 and 1990. However, tragedy has struck the pace bowler in the past few years, and he is now paralysed after having fallen in an accident whilst clearing trees.

Davis had joined Glamorgan in 1982 after Ezra Moseley sustained a stress fracture. He responded with 42 wickets in his 13 first-class appearances, despite being plagued by run-up problems and a tendency to deliver no balls. He took a further 52 wickets at 26 apiece in 1983, and his tally would have been higher had he not been on duty with the West Indies in the World Cup. It proved to be a successful competition for the lithe and whippy fast bowler, who took 7-51 against Australia at Headingley, which at the time were the best ever bowling figures in the competition.
Davis was surprisingly omitted from the West Indian party to tour England in 1984, so he returned to Glamorgan at the start of the season. However, after an injury to Milton Small, he was summoned into the tour party, and ended up on top of the tour bowling averages. He also produced a career-best 77 in the Old Trafford Test, after coming in as a nightwatchman.
Davis also played first-class cricket for Wellington and Tasmania, and captained the Windward Islands in 1988. He also appeared in 15 Tests and 35 One Day Internationals for the West Indies.
