Gemmill was a talented cricketer and hockey player, playing in 51 matches for Glamorgan between 1920 and 1926, as well as winning eight Welsh hockey caps between 1921 and 1924.

 

The right-handed batsman and seam bowler played club cricket for Swansea, and served as their captain in 1924.
