PAINTER, John Richard.

Born at Lansdown, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, 11th November 1856.
Died at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, 16th September 1900.
He was the son of William C, Painter, of Bourton-on-the-Water, a timber dealer. He worked in the family business, playing club cricket with Bourton-on-the Water C.C. He first went out as a professional in 1881 and 1882 when he was with the Clitheroe Club in Lancashire. In 1881 he was first tried by Gloucestershire and between then and 1897 he played in 198 first-class matches, 192 of them for Gloucestershire. From 1883 he was cricket coach at Cheltenham College until 1894 when he moved the Clifton College.
In August 1894 the match between Gloucestershire and Middlesex at Clifton was awarded to him as a benefit. In 1895 he opened a cricket and athletic store in the Clifton area. When he died at the age of 43 he left a widow and two children.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living with his parents at Lansdown Villa, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. His father is William C., aged 59, a timber dealer, and his mother is Caroline, aged 60. Also present are his unmarried brother, Edward J., aged 35, also a timber dealer and his unmarried sister Caroline A., aged 18. John is unmarried, aged 24, yet another timber dealer.
