PORTER, George.
Professional.
Born at Kilburn, Derbyshire, 3rd December 1861.
Died at Spondon, Derbyshire, 15th July 1908.
His first recorded engagement as a professional cricketer was with the Northwood Club, West Cowes, Isle of Wight, in 1880 and in 1881 he was with the South Derbyshire Club. In 1881 he was first tried by Derbyshire, but it was 1888 before he established himself in the side. In all he played in 37 first-class matches, 36 of them for Derbyshire, 1881-96. In 1882 he was with Birkenhead Park, in 1883 and 1884 at Wigan, in 1885 at Lowerhouse, in 1886 at Grimsby, 1887-89 at Longsight, Manchester, and in 1890-92 by Broughton, Manchester. During 1896 he strained himself and had to undergo surgery, bringing his first-class career to an end. He appeared for Lowerhouse again in 1897, but his active days were over. He stood as umpire in first-class matches 1899-1903. By occupation he was a chimney-sweep.
In the 1881 Census he appears living at Chapel Street, Spondon, Derbyshire, aged 20, a professional cricketer, with his wife Elizabeth, aged 26, born at West Cowes, Hampshire. (He obviously did more than play cricket on his visit to the Isle of Wight).
