RAWLIN, John Thomas.
Professional.
Born at Greaseborough, Rotherham, Yorkshire, 10th November 1856.
Died at Greaseborough, Rotherham, Yorkshire, 19th January 1924.
He was the son of John Rawlin, joiner and wheelwright, of Greaseborough, Rotherham, Yorkshire. A joiner by trade, he went out as a cricket professional with the Leek Club, Staffordshire 1880-82. He was with Elsecar 1883. First tried by Yorkshire against Gloucestershire in 1880 he played in 27 first-class matches during the next five years. He then had a period as professional at the Lincoln Lindum Club, going on to become a member of the MCC ground-staff in 1887, where he stayed until 1911. This enabled him to play for Middlesex under residential qualification and he turned out for them 229 times between 1889 and 1909. He toured Australia with Vernons team 1887/9. Around 1914 he was coach at Tonbridge School.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 8 Main Street, Greaseborough, with his father, John, aged 58, a joiner and wheelwright and mother Caroline, aged 58. John Thomas is aged 24, a joiner and County cricketer, and his brother William T. is aged 22, an iron moulder.
