Simon Base joined Glamorgan in 1986 after being recommended to the county by their all-rounder Geoff Holmes, who had played alongside the Kent-born bowler in club cricket in South Africa.

 

Base subsequently made his Glamorgan debut in 1986, but although showing promise with his swing bowling, Base failed to command a regular place in the Welsh county`s line-up and in 1988 Base moved north to join Derbyshire. Base also played for Western Province, Boland and Border, and in 1989 he toured Holland with the England `A` team.
