STEEL, Allan Gibson.
Amateur.
Born at West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, 24th September 1858.
Died at Hyde Park, London, 15th June 1914.
The son of Joseph Steel, of Liverpool, a shipowner, he was educated at Marlborough, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1874-77, being captain in his last two years. He went up to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and represented his University at cricket 1878-81, being captain in 1881, and winning his blue all four years, he also won a blue for rackets. He first played for Lancashire in 1877, the first of 162 first-class matches, including 47 for Lancashire and 13 Test Matches. He toured Australia in 1882/3. His last first-class match was for I Zingari in 1895. He was President of the MCC in 1902. He was considered one of the leading all-rounders of his day. His three brothers H.B., D.Q. and H.B. all played for Lancashire and his son A.I. for Middlesex.
He was admitted a barrister at Inner Temple in 1883 and practised in Liverpool. He became a King’s Council in 1901 and Recorder of Oldham in 1904. He died at his residence 12 Cleveland Gardens, Hyde Park, London.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was visiting 26 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, the lodging house of Jesse and Sarah Hill, both aged 60, whose daughter-in-law Fanny G. Wise, a governess, aged 22 is also present. Also present are three undergraduate lodgers, Gerad Streatfield, Claude A.C. Ponsonby and J.A. Hilyard. Alan G. Steel, aged 22, is a B.A. Cantab, no occupation. There are two domestic servants.
