Brief profile of Arthur Thornton
by Don Ambrose

Player:A Thornton

THORNTON, Arthur.
Professional.
Born at Wilsden, Yorkshire, 20th July 1854.
Died at Saltaire, Yorkshire, 19th April 1915.
He played in the Yorkshire Colts matches in 1877 and again in 1881. He was tried three times in first-class matches in 1881 without success. It is thought that he might come from Saltaire or Wilsden.
In the 1881 Census there are two Arthur Thorntons who might be the right man, but it is by no means sure whether either of them is correct.

2. 12 Court, 1 Aberdeen Street, Eccleshall Bierlow, Yorkshire, aged 27, unmarried, born at Sheffield, a hotel porter, living with his two brothers, Fred, unmarried, aged 33 born Sheffield, an optician (brass turner) and John, married, aged 31 born Sheffield, a retired shop keeper.
