THORNTON, James Richard.
Amateur.
Born at North Street, Horsham, Kent, 11th January 1861.
Died at Burgess Hill, Sussex, 1st March 1916.
He received his education at private schools at Mitcham and Horsham, where presumably he learned his cricket. He was tried by Sussex in three matches, 1880-83 without much success.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 29 Carfax, Horsham, Sussex, with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, aged 46 born Woolwich, Kent, a beer house keeper. He is unmarried, aged 20, and a solicitors clerk, as are his brothers Robert aged 18 and Richard aged 15. His third brother John Charles aged 12 is still a scholar. There is one servant, a cellarman.
