Born at Crabtree, Pitsmoor, Sheffield, Yorkshire, 21st October 1851.
Died at Pitsmoor, Sheffield, Yorkshire, 18th June 1898.
As a boy he played at Crabtree, before joining the Pitsmoor Club at the age of 16. From 1871 to 1873 he was professional at the Old Horton Road ground at Bradford and in 1873 he was first selected for Yorkshire. Between then and 1893 he was to play in 537 first-class matches, including 359 for Yorkshire and 25 Test Matches. He toured Australia five times, 1876/7, 1878/9, 1881/2, 1884/5 and 1887/8, North America 1879, and South Africa 1888/9. Until 1883 he was the goal-keeper for Sheffield Wednesday. A most popular cricketer, he was known as Happy Jack. He was a first-class umpire 1894-95. He was a steel sheet roller by trade but in 1889 he became publican of the Queen’s Head Inn, Castle Street, Sheffield, but moved to the Vine Hotel, Brunswick Street, Sheffield. 4,000 people attended his funeral at Burngreave Cemetery.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 23 Roe Lane, Pitsmoor, aged 29. a sheet roller (steel), with his wife Emma, also 29, and their three daughters Kate aged 4, Lora aged 3 and Zoe aged 7 months. There is one domestic servant.
