WAKE, William Robert.
Amateur.
Born at Sheffield, Yorkshire, 21st May 1852.
Died at Norwood, Sheffield, Yorkshire, 14th March 1896.
He was the son of William Wake, of Sheffield, solicitor, and nephew of Bernard Wake, of Sheffield, solicitor, who played cricket for Yorkshire 1849-51. He was educated in Belgium but learnt his cricket in Sheffield and played for the Pitsmoor Club. He was tried in three matches for Yorkshire in 1881, without success, and played soccer for the Sheffield F.C. He was a solicitor and became Registrar of the Sheffield County Court.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at Osgathorpe House, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire, with his father, William, aged 62, a practising solicitor, and mother Eliza, aged 60. He is unmarried, aged 28, a solicitor, and has five unmarried brothers also in residence – Bearnard J., aged 32, Roman Catholic priest at St Patricks, Bradford, Henry, aged 31, a solicitor, Michael A., aged 30, engineer machinery, Francis A., aged 23, a surveyor, and Richard J., aged 20, solicitors articled clerk. He also has two unmarried sisters Mary H., aged 34 and Edith C., aged 25. There are five domestic servants.
