WRIGHT, Walter.
Professional.
Born at Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire, 29th February 1856.
Died at Leigh, Lancashire, 22nd March 1940.
He first went out as a professional cricketer with the Notts Bank club in 1873, at the age of seventeen. In 1878-9 he was with the Mote Park CC in Kent and the following year at the beginning with the Canadian tourists and later at Kidderminster Rovers. In 1881 he was at Middlesborough, in 1882 at Sussex CCC at Hove and then in 1886 he returned to the Mote Park Club where he stayed until 1899. In 1879 he made his first class debut for Nottinghamshire. In all he played 289 matches, 72 for Nottinghamshire 1879-86 and 191 for Kent 1888-99. He was on the first-class umpires list 1900-04 and in 1904 played for Berkshire. He was for some years coach at Radley College. In his early years he was a noted sprinter and won the Sheffield Handicap twice, in 1880 and 1881. He also acted as trainer to association football clubs.
In the 1881 Census the only Walter Wright of the same age is lodging at Batten Street, Aylestone, Leicestershire, at the home of John W. Pilcher aged 45 born Margate, Kent, a provisions dealer, and his wife Emma aged 48 born at Sheerness. They have a 7 year old son, Frederick J., and three lodgers, including a Walter Wright, aged 25 born Nottingham, a miner.
