YOUNG, Charles Robertson.
Professional.
Born at Dharwar, India, 2nd February 1852.
This man sometimes appeared for the Gentlemen of Hampshire and at others for the Gentlemen. However he went as a professional at Dumfries, Scotland 1875-76 and at Stubbington, near Fareham in 1877. He was first selected for Hampshire in a first-class match in 1867 when he was 15 years and 131 days old, the youngest cricketer to appear for a first class county. Between then and 1885 he played in 38 first-class matches, all of them for Hampshire. He played on for Hampshire until 1890 in non-first-class matches. He was by occupation a clerk at Southampton, where he lived.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at St Georges Road, Millbrook, Hampshire, aged 29 a professional cricketer, with his wife Elizabeth, aged 32 a dressmaker. They have two daughters Maud J. aged 10 and Mabel E. aged 2, and two sons Arch aged 7 and William aged 4. Also present is Eliza Payne, aged 72, his mother-in-law.
