A steady right-hand middle order batsman with a sound defence, a fair change bowler at club level and a sound judge of the game. His club cricket was mostly for the Manchester Club and with Sale, Cheshire.

 

On the 28th and 29th August 1871 he played for the Gentlemen of Lancashire against the Gentlemen of Warwickshire at Warwick. He scored 6 in his only innings and took a catch.

 

On the 17th and 18th August 1874 he played his only match for Lancashire, against Kent at Maidstone, when he opened the Lancashire innings with Barlow unsuccessfully. In the first innings Barlow carried his bat for 26 through the Lancashire innings of 116.

 

He first played for Cheshire in 1882, when the County were still based at Chelford. That season he played in four matches and scored 113 runs at an avaerage of 28.25, with a top score of 87 not out. He also took nine wickets.

 

In 1883 the Cheshire Club reformed at Stockport and between then and 1891 he played for them 34 times scoring 408 runs. He captained Cheshire from 1889 to 1891.

 

At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 18 Hope Road, Sale, Cheshire, aged 29, an East Indian merchant, with his wife Amelia B. aged 27, and son William aged 1. There is one domestic servant.
