The first day of this match saw dreary conditions and dreary batting as the Wellington batsmen scored their runs at a snails pace. The Otago bowlers bowled good tight lines with McSkimmimg, Scott, Wilson and Morland all being hard to score off. The only real batting highlight of the day was Neil Parlane’s huge six of Morland which left the ground and landed in a vegetation rich median strip.

 

The second day, however, proved to be a complete contrast to the first as Chris Nevin and Matthew Walker engaged in some of the most exciting batting of the entire Championship season in adding 250 for the 8th wicket. Both ended up with centuries and their record display meant that the Otago bowlers saw their impressive runs per over stats of the first day get blown out of all proportion. Otago in reply ended the day at a rollicking pace in scoring 154/2 of 37 overs. Craig Cumming was 45 not out whilst Chris Gaffaney brought some of his State Shield form with him in reaching a thundering 69.

 

The weekend weather proved inclement however with only a further 39 overs possible on the Sunday. The was enough time for Lawson and Cumming to reach their 50’s and take advantage of what were wonderful batting conditions.
