Match report Lancs v Glam in totesport League 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Glamorgan

Summary

With only two losses from their previous 19 matches in this competition, Lancashire clashed head on with an unbeaten Glamorgan side at Old Trafford in this totesport match, knowing that only one team would remain undefeated in all competitions by the end of the day. Everyone anticipated a hard fought close encounter. However, following on from last weeks thrashing of Hampshire with 79 balls to spare, Lancashire handed out yet another comprehensive cricket display to win with 61 balls to spare and move top of the table.

Lancashire won the toss and elected to field first. This would normally be a strange choice to make when the pitch is in immaculate condition, the outfield is very fast and the sun is beating down from the sky. Such is Lancashire's confidence at the moment, that captain Warren Hegg feels his side can not only restrict their opponents in such ideal conditions, but chase down any target which their opponents care to set. As it transpired, this was the case in this match.

The visitors eased their past 100 in just the 20th over for the loss of two wickets - Croft was bowled by Anderson for 9, and Elliott was neatly caught by Cork at mid-off for 32. By the time Powell was caught by Hogg fielding in the deep for 28 (132-3), the platform had been set for a score in excess of 230 - perhaps as high as 260 if everyone contributed down the batting order. During the next 13 overs, Glamorgan added 63 runs whilst experiencing 2 further losses (195-5) - Wharf was bowled by Hooper's arm ball for 72 and Hemp chipped tamely to mid-on for 10. With 7 overs remaining and Matthew Maynard at the crease unbeaten on 29, the crowd waited for the late batting onslaught to begin.

Adrian Dale's wicket in the 38th over transformed the course of the game - caught by Mark Chilton in the gully for 4 (195-6). What followed in the next 4 overs was not only attributable to some poor stroke play, but some high quality bowling, and some shrewd bowling changes from Hegg. Wallace (2) fell victim to Sutcliffe's catch in the 39th over (201-7). Matthew Maynard (35) was adjudged leg before wicket in the 40th over (206-8) - a painfully slow verdict by umpire Burgess. Cosker (2) was bowled in the 42nd over (210-9), and Anderson beat Harrison (2) all ends up with the first ball of his third spell, to leave the Dragons all out for just 210 - failing to use the last 17 balls of their innings. Sajid Mahmood finished with 4 for 39.

Any lingering thoughts that Glamorgan held regarding winning this match were extinguished within the first 10 overs of Lancashire's response. Mal Loye blasted the ball to all areas of the ground including 2 spectacular sixes. He eventually fell for 42 runs from just 35 balls as he attempted another one of his favourite "slog-shots" to the leg side (52-1). Iain Sutcliffe also scored at over a run a ball (30 from 29) before being beaten by Cosker as he advanced down the wicket (85-2 in the 12th over). Law and Chilton added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket before Croft dislodged Law's bail as he attempted a fine cut through the vacant third man region (35 from 34 - 117-3).

Mark Chilton and Carl Hooper added 50 runs during the next 9 overs without appearing to take any significant risks. In desperation, Robert Croft reintroduced Wharf to the bowling attack in the 29th over. He was rewarded immediately, as Chilton was yorked by Wharf's first ball for 27 (172-4). With the run rate now below 3 per over and with 16 overs remaining, there was little cause for concern for the huge crowd when Glen Chapple was caught by Elliott at mid-on for 14 in the 32nd over (193-5). On 46 not out, Carl Hooper stroked the ball through the covers. The crowd roared and willed the ball over the ropes. Unfortunately, the ball was pulled up just inside the boundary leaving Hooper stranded on 49, as Cork scampered the winning run shortly afterwards. Another early finish for the league leaders!

Man of the match - Carl Hooper 2 for 35 and 49 runs from 44 balls
