Match report Lancs v Notts in Twenty20 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Nottinghamshire

Summary

Everybody seems to love the shortened version of the one-day game. Twenty 20 cricket has been an undisputed success. Owing to heavy afternoon and early evening rain, this match was reduced to just eight over per side. Thankfully, the rain ceased shortly after 6pm providing the ground staff with just enough time to prepare for a shortened match. If the game had been postponed, Lightning would have automatically been eliminate from the competition. All credit must go to the ground staff for clearing up so quickly and persistently working out in the rain, in the hope that it would stop.

Stand in captain, Andrew Flintoff won the toss and elected to field. The Outlaws started well accumulating 51 runs without loss by the end of the 5th over. Keedy eventually removed Hussey (33) with the second ball of the sixth over thanks to a simple catch by Mal Loye at mid-wicket (52-1). Dominic Cork entered the bowling attack in the 7th over. His first 3 balls went for 9 runs. However, he collected three wickets in succession to claim a superb hat-trick by removing Pietersen (7), Ealham (0) and Patel (0) - 71 for 4. It was ironical that Hooper held the catch for the third wicket considering Hooper was Cork's hat-trick victim in a test match at Old Trafford. Carl Hooper then proceeded to claim the wicket of Shafayat in the final over, as Nottinghamshire stumbled to 79 for 5 from their eight overs. Chris Read remained unbeaten on 34.

Lancashire gained control of the game after just two overs of their innings by reaching 36 without loss. Flintoff was savage regardless of where the ball was bowled. Sidebottom conceded 2 successive sixes, as Flintoff hammered his way to 31 from just 11 balls. Samit Patel, who came into the attack in just the third over accounted for Flintoff thanks to a boundary edge catch by Hussey (41-1). Perhaps the game would have taken a different turn if Harris had held a sharp chance at mid wicket in the 1st over. Loye (20) and Hooper (15) accumulated runs without taking any significant risks, although Loye was also fortunate to survive a dropped chance in the 4th over. In one last bid of desperation, Read turned to Kevin Pietersen in the sixth over. The spinner conceded nine runs, but did manage to remove both Loye and Hooper thanks to two excellent catches in the deep by Clough (68-3).

It was appropriate that Dominic Cork hit the winning runs with a boundary four off his legs with 7 deliveries to spare. He set-up the victory, Flintoff developed the success and Cork wrapped up the win. A short game but a very exciting one nevertheless.

Lancashire finished second in the Northern group to set up an away tie at Hampshire.
