Inzamam scales a new peak
by Muhammad Asim

Player:Inzamam-ul-Haq

Inzamam-ul-Haq woke up on September 19, 2004 to realize that he was now no more anybody but somebody in international cricket. His already big stature grew huge in size in a matter of just 24 hours. The 34-year-old Pakistan captain scaled a new peak of his ODI career when he reached 23 during his 41-run knock in ICC Champions Trophy match against India at Edgbaston. He became only the second player after Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar to complete 10000 runs in one-day international cricket. It was the 299th innings of his 322nd LOI match. Tendulkar who became the first ever batsman to cross the five-figure mark, did so in his 266th match (and 259th innings) against Australia at Indore on March 31, 2001. Tendulkar required 11 years and 103 days to reach the milestone of 10000 runs as compared to Inzamam who took 12 years and 305 days to reach his batting apogee. (Note: The Graphical analysis shows how many innings Inzamam and Tendulkar took to achieve each multiple of 1000 runs).

Born on March 3, 1970 at Multan, the burly Inzamam made his ODI international debut against West Indies on November 22, 1991 in the second game of the three match series. Two months after his ODI debut, Sri Lanka toured Pakistan and Inzamam had a wonderful series. He scored his maiden century in Multan in the 4th ODI and another one in the next match at Rawalpindi. Imran Khan was so impressed by the young batsman that he decided to select him for the World Cup in Australia. Inzamam didn't exactly live up to his expectations as his performance throughout the tournament was ordinary, but Imran kept on encouraging him and guided him. It was not until the semifinal of the World Cup that Inzamam proved his potential. Chasing a huge total of 263, Inzamam coming in at number six position played a stunning innings of 60 off just 37 balls. Pakistan made it into the finals and eventually went on to win the World Cup. Inzamam made another priceless contribution in the final with a quick fire 42 off 35 balls.

After that Inzamam had a little decline as he was not consistent with his scoring. But slowly and gradually Inzamam cemented his position in the Pakistan side for his subtlety, versatility and powerful batting. The 6ft 2in right-hander became Pakistan's main middle-order batsman and effectively proved his worth in both styles of the game. Inzamam had been a player who was never tried hard to bring out the best in him. As Imran always tells about Inzamam, he could always have been much better. But now as the captain of the Pakistan team he is developing into a more mature player. For the benefit of readers here are the complete statistical details of Inzamam’s ODI career.
