Scorecard: | Gloucestershire v Lancashire |
Summary for Day 2

Three quick wickets in poor light during the afternoon session, put Lancashire in control of this match. Eventually, heavy rain forced the players from the field (99-5). The ground staff were incredibly slow to cover the wicket/square (5-6 minutes) , and one fancied Lancashire's chances of wrapping up Gloucestershire's innings upon resumption 104 minutes later on a spiced up wicket. Alas, only one further wicket fell in the final session spanning 27 overs. Truthfully, Adshead should have been dismissed. He survived two dropped catches by Chapple and Haynes with the score on 108 and 167 respectively.
A total of 38 overs were lost due to two rain breaks of 16 and 22 overs. The days play started one hour later. Mongia failed to add to his overnight score of 111 after edging to Adshead with just the fourth ball of the day (392-9). Martin and Keedy added 13 more useful runs before Martin found Weston at mid-off for 20 and the innings closed on 375. This was a very useful score on a bowler friendly track.
Gloucester lost two crucial early wickets. Spearman for 9 tickled Chapple to Haynes (19-1) and Martin trapped Hussey in front for 5 in the 9th over (28-2). A positive response from umpire Hartley only coming after a sustained appeal. Taylor and Weston frustrated Lancashire for 15 overs before Cork trapped Taylor plumb in front for 33 - he played around a straight delivery (93-3). Drama occurred in the 28th over, when Gidman clearly gloved the ball to Haynes down the leg side from the bowling of Dominic Cork. Unfortunately, the umpire did not agree and Gidman survived despite walking backwards toward the pavilion in negative expectation. However, Cork had the last laugh as he bowled Gidman with the very next ball (99-4) and justice was seen to be done. Anderson who earlier in the afternoon replaced Peter Martin after being released by England, dismissed Weston for 44 in the 29th over. The left handed opening batsman mis-timed a pull stroke and the ball shot straight up into the air. Anderson ran back to take a comfortable catch (99-5).
As mentioned earlier, the rain intervention did not benefit Lancashire as much as expected. Fortunately, Franklin (34) was caught at the wicket by Haynes with 6 balls of the day remaining. A small consolation following Adshead's two dropped chances. Overall, Lancashire still have the upper hand in this match and will be looking to enforce the follow on if at all possible on the third day.
