Player:AN Cook

DateLine: 3rd May 2009

In school cricket, he broke all sorts of records and was thrust into the county circuit early. Coached by the great Graham Gooch, he hit his maiden First Class century in 2004, before captaining England in the 2004 under-19 World Cup, where he also hit two centuries. In the midst of an injury crisis, he made his Test debut against India in 2006 and hasn’t looked back ever since. In 41 Tests, he has scored 3078 runs at a good average of 43.35, with 8 centuries and 19 fifties. This means that as an opener, not only is he compact but also consistent, given his penchant for converting fifties into hundreds. Back to back hundreds against Pakistan in 2006 only cemented his place in the side. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2006 but was given the role of opening the innings only a bit later. Since then, he has played 21 ODIs scoring 667 runs at 31.76 per innings. Cook became the youngest England batsman to pass 2000 Test runs in New Zealand in 2008 on a tour in which he only managed one fifty, but his catching improved no end. He caught six beauties in the first Test in Hamilton.
