All-round performance from Collingwood helped England to humble West Indies in the second ODI thus establishing a lead of 1-0 in the series. West Indies need to win the third and the final ODI to level the series.

 

West Indies were put into bat and they were shot out for 160. Stuart Broad caused early problems with an impressive opening burst, and wrapped up the innings to end with 4 for 46, but Paul Collingwood proved the unlikely destroyer of the middle order after Dwayne Bravo had begun a recovery with a positive half century.

 

Broad and James Anderson made life tough early in the West Indian innings. Anderson beat Chris Gayle with the first ball of the match and Broad was on target straight away as trapped Lendl Simmons lbw when the batsman played across a straight ball. In Broad's next over, he found the perfect length to bring Ramnaresh Sarwan into a loose push outside off. Gayle began by slashing Broad square then drilled him straight for four having almost picked out mid-off attempting a similar stroke. They were followed by a mighty swing over long-on for six and a slice through backward point and suddenly the momentum was shifting. Strauss countered introduced Graeme Swann inside the first Powerplay, but the first ball to Gayle disappeared high over long-on for another maximum. Swann pushed the next delivery through a little quicker and Gayle was cleaned up.

 

Chanderpaul and Bravo were left to steady the innings and Bravo in particular looked in good. However, just as the stand with Chanderpaul top-edged a pull to short third-man and shortly after Bravo reached a 55-ball fifty he missed a slower ball from Collingwood. Collingwood proved mighty effective as he varied his pace and bowled a wicket-to-wicket line. Denesh Ramdin was trapped on the crease and Kieron Pollard was castled as he tried some expansive during the batting Powerplay. Taylor was run out in a horrible mix-up with Pollard as he attempted a non-existent single to Strauss. Broad wiped away Sulieman Benn and Ravi Rampaul as the innings ended without bang.

 

Strauss and Ravi Bopara began steadily in the chase, but the captain fell shortly before the interval when he got into a tangle against a short ball from Jerome Taylor and the ball looped off the top edge. Matt Prior could have been run out without facing, but Bravo missed his throw at the stumps and ended up in a collision with the batsman.

 

After the lunch England resumed their innings and Prior and Bopara did not have much trouble in negotiating the Windies pace attack as they cruised to their target of 161. But against the run of play Prior guided a wide ball into the hands of Gayle at wide second slip. Bravo then trapped a well set Bopara in front of his stumps to give Windies a glimmer of hope. Collingwood and Shah then consolidated as they kept the scoreboard ticking with some quick singles and also some well timed boundaries before an unnecessary run-out terminated Shah’s innings. Collingwood and Morgan then completed the formalities without much hiccups.
