Despite missing out on most of their senior players, The West Indies are still on top after day two of the first Test against Bangladesh.

 

The hosts had put together a second-string line-up after a dispute over pay between first-choice centrally-contracted players and the West Indies Cricket Board forced most of the senior players to withdraw from the series. They were still too strong for the tourists, who needed some lower-order resistance in order to post a total of 238.

 

West Indies were 17 for one in reply at stumps, with Dale Richards the man out for 13, trapped lbw by Shakib Al Hasan.

 

Tino Best, making his comeback and David Bernard did their chances of remaining in the side a world of good reducing the tourists to 121 for six at lunch.

 

Resuming from a strong position of 42 without loss after rain had limited the first day's play to 18.5 overs, Bangladesh had added only three more when Tamim Iqbal edged Best to Floyd Reifer.

 

The 50 had still not come up when Tamim's fellow opener Imrul Kayes was also trapped lbw by Darren Sammy.

 

A double strike from Bernard helped the Windies remove Raqibul Hasan and Junaid Siddique. The prized scalp of Mohammad Ashraful though went to Tino Best, who is playing in his 13th Test match.

 

There was still time for Kemar Roach to dismiss Shakib before the rain came and with the covers in place, the players looked set for an extended break from the field.

 

Roach took the only wicket in the second session of the day when play did resume, removing Mahmudullah for 14 who was caught by Omar Phillips.

 

The tourists rallied to 238 all out thanks to some good solid batting by the tail. Mushfiqur Rahim added 36 off 81 balls before he was run out, Mashrafe Mortaza struck 39 before becoming Roach's third victim and Shahadat Hossein was the last man to go for 33 when he edged a ball from Ryan Austin to wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton.
