The Australian selectors have included seven uncapped players in their preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa this year. The two surprising omissions from the list were the right handed batsman Brad Hodge and the right arm medium pacer Stuart Clark. This could spell end to their one day aspirations as the selectors are willing to look beyond them keeping in mind the 2011 World Cup.

 

The left-arm spinner Jon Holland and the offspinner Jason Krejza will battle it out for the second spinner's spot as Hauritz is on his way to claim the main spinner's slot. he Tasmanian wicketkeeper Tim Paine has emerged as the new limited-overs backup to Brad Haddin, following strong performances for Australia A.

 

Phillip Hughes may also be trialled in the one-day format after being used as a Test specialist so far, while his fellow Ashes squad member Andrew McDonald is also in the mix. The other members of the group yet to make their ODI debuts are Moises Henriques, who has played a Twenty20 for Australia, and the Victoria fast bowler Clint McKay, who also featured for Australia A recently.

 

The squad will be trimmed to 15 next month for the eight-team tournament, which starts on September 22. Australia are in Group A along with the West Indies, India and Pakistan.
