England rookie Joe Denly could miss out on the opening one day international against Australia on Friday after suffering a suspected knee injury.

Denly had to be carried off at The Oval, where England were practicing ahead of the match.

England team spokesman James Avery told BBC Sport: "He is being assessed by the physio and until that happens we won't know any more about Joe's condition.

"We're waiting for medical staff to have a close look at him."

Avery said the injury was "possibly" to the Kent player's knee. The cricinfo website reported he was playing football with team-mates when the injury occurred.

Denly, 23, top-scored for his country with 67 on debut against Ireland in Belfast in August before being dismissed for a first-ball duck in the abandoned first Twenty20 international against Australia at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, former England opener Marcus Trescothick has called for Ashes debut centurion Jonathan Trott's inclusion in the ODI squad.

"I think the selectors have missed a trick in not adding Jonathan to the 15-man ODI squad, which was named before Trott did so well in the last Ashes Test," 33-year-old Trescothick wrote in his column for the Bristol Evening Post.

"I would have thought this was an ideal opportunity to draft in someone who has shown that he can do it under pressure and the pressure doesn't come more intense than the experienced at The Oval.

"He has a great record in domestic Twenty20 and 50-over cricket and I would have thought this would have been a good chance to fast-track him into the team."
