Ramsbottom have signed New South Wales batsman Usman Khawaja as their professional for the forthcoming season.

The Pakistani born left handed early order batsman has scored 1136 First-class runs at 47.3 since his debut in 2008. His right arm medium paced bowling has yet to secure a wicket in the First-class game. Last season the 24 year-old hit 525 runs at 47.7, including successive centuries against Queensland and Western Australia

Ramsbottom's Cricket Manager Andy Dalby said: "Obviously we thought we had secured Aakash Chopra for the forthcoming season but that wasn't to be. We then had to start the search again. When one or two things didn't happen, I was given the name of Usman Khawaja.

"Although not well known over here, from doing some digging I soon realised he is big news in Australia. Working in partnership with Steven Hirst at cricx.com we set about securing Usman's services.

"We now have a signed contract back from Usman and are excited about the prospect of seeing him at Acre Bottom for the 2010 season!"

Khawaja is a team-mate of former Ramsbottom professional Michael Clarke at New South Wales.
