Deccan Chargers seem to have got their ingredients right as they have now found ways to get around the better sides. First it was against Royal Challengers Bangalore and now against Chennai Super Kings as they put up a professional and clinical performance. First the 'home' side restricted Chennai to a poor 138 and then batted well to reach the target with little difficulty.
For both the sides it was a must-win match and Dhoni decided to bat first after winning the toss. Openers M Vijay (23, 13b, 1x6, 1x4) and Hayden (19, 18b, 3x4) gave the visitors a brisk start as the duo found the boundary ropes regularly. Chennai raced to 41 in 4.4 overs before Harmeet Singh got a faint outside edge of Hayden. Murali Vijay was going strong before some suicidal running between the wickets brought down curtains to his innings. That was a blow from which the Chennai Super Kings failed to recover.
Barring Suresh Raina (52, 42b, 2x6, 4x4) none of the batsmen showed the spine to take the attack by the scruff of the neck. The innings went bust as Dhoni (7, 13b) was cleaned up up a ripper from Ojha while Hussey (8, 11b) and Badrinath (6, 6b, 1x4) failed to set the stage alight. Chennai literally limped to a pathetic score of 138 for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Deccan Chargers raced off the blocks as openers Mishra and Gilchrist got the early boundaries to put the heat on Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni persisted with off-spinner Ashwin and the bowler responded to his skipper's call. In the fifth over bowled by the bowler first he induced a faint outside edge from Gilchrist's bat and then had Mishra (21, 18b, 1x6, 2x4) stumped to give some nerves in the Deccan camp. Rohit Sharma (8, 11b) was unlucky as a normally non-agile Tyagi dived full length to take a splendid catch as Deccan found themselves at a tricky position.
Last match heroes Suman was joined at the crease by Symonds and the two mixed caution with aggression to give direction to the Deccan innings. Suman got his second IPL fifty but was dismissed in the dying minutes of the game. Symonds (27 not out, 22b, 2x6) ensured that Deccan registered their second consecutive win.
