The Zimbabwean side showed great heart as they got better of India to win the encounter by six wickets. A second-string Indian side the conditions too hot to handle as the Zimbabwean side controlled the match for the major part and though the Indian side mounted a fightback the Zimbabwean side finally got over the line.
India's stand-in skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and realising that batting was the strength decided to bat first. The openers for their stay in the middle was never in any sort of discomfort as runs came in a fast clip. The openers Vijay (11, 24b, 1x4) and Karthik (22, 39b, 2x4) put on 56 in 9 overs before some lazy bit of running from Vijay cost his wicket. Another run-out send Kohli (0, 0b) back to the hut and once Karthik fell the Indian innings were in doldrums.
Rohit Sharma (114, 119b, 4x6, 6x4) and Suresh Raina (37, 53b, 2x4) then repaired the innings with a steadying partnership of 67 runs in 17.3 overs before the skipper was caught behind. Ravindra Jadeja (61 not out, 61b, 5x4) played a responsible knock to help India reach a competitive total of 285 for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs.
Zimbabwe in reply got off to a flier thanks to Masakadza (46, 43b, 1x6, 5x4) and Taylor (81, 103b, 2x6, 4x4) who took the attack to the Indian bowlers who had no answer. The assault was withering and demoralising and that really took out the wind in the Indian sails. Though Mishra removed Masakadza the runs came at a fair pace. There were healthy contributions from the middle order as Greg Lamb (27, 43b), Coventry (32, 25b, 3x6) and the violent Chigumbura (24 not out, 16b, 4x4) and with Ervine scoring his maiden fifty it was all smiles for the hosts.
