After chasing leather for the better part of the first day, the visitors mounted a brilliant fightback to lay claims to the second day's honours. Shahadat Hossain and Tamim Iqbal were the chief architects of the the fightback while for England Jonathan Trott continued to star with the bat. At the end of the second day's play Bangladesh were placed at 172 for the loss of 2 wickets in reply England's 505.

 

The English side began the day at 362 for the loss of 4 wickets and soon lost their fifth wicket in the form Morgan (44, 80b, 2x4) as the southpaw edged behind of a tireless Shahadat Hossain. Prior (16, 24b, 2x4) was at his usual busy self at the crease but some headless chicken running between the wickets cost his wicket. Bresnan (25, 65, 2x4) batted sensibly while Trott got to his maiden double ton. It was a majestic display of classy batting as he was making the first tentative steps to cement the number three position as his own. Shahadat Hossain removed Bresnan and Trott and then cleaned up Anderson (13, 16b, 3x4) to have his name inscribed on the honours board.

 

The English innings folded up for 505 in 125 overs.

 

The Bangladeshi innings in reply got off to a positive start thanks to Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes. The left-handed opening pair were not overawed by the huge score before them as they set about taking the English bowling head-on. The English bowling in fact looked flat out in the middle as they ran out of ideas fast.

 

Tamim Iqbal had survived a scare when he fell awkwardly on his left-wrist during fielding. But the way he batted it was evident that the pain was the last thing on his mind. Boundaries flew off his bat frequently and soon the ultra-aggressive field setting became semi-defensive. Tamim Iqbal got to his fifty but was soon run-out as a direct hit from Pietersen found the southpaw just short of his crease. Imrul Kayes found the pace and bounce of Steve Finn too hot to handle and gloved it to Strauss at first slip. If the English side thought that they could rip apart the Bangladeshi batting line-up they were mistaken. Junaid Siddique (53 batting, 105b, 8x4) and Jahurul Islam (16, 53b, 2x4) showed admirable temperament as they kept the English bowlers at bay. At the close of day's play the Bangladeshi score read 172 for 2.
