Colne have signed Kelly Smuts of South Africa as professional for the 2011 season. The 20 year-old has scored 926 runs at 40.3 since making his First-class debut for Eastern Province in 2009. He has yet to take a wicket at First-class level. Colne Chairman Trevor Lonsdale said: "We are delighted to have secured the signing of such a highly regarded rising star in Kelly Smuts, he is a genuine all rounder who is a class batsman and who bowls quickly. He was a star of the South African U19 team in 2009 and his signing is just the first step in the rebuilding process that we are undertaking this winter at the club and we look forward with great anticipation to his contribution both on and off the pitch in 2011."

Kelly, who is the brother of former Chorley professional Jon Jon Smuts who sub proed for Colne last season, will be the club's seventh South African professional. He takes over from Anwar Ali.
