Centuries of contrasting styles from Jacques Kallis and AB De Villiers helped South Africa to take control on day one of the second Test. South Africa reached 311 for five at stumps.

After being put in to bat, the South Africans slipped to six for two and then 33 for three as debutant Tanvir Ahmed made light work of the top-order. Kallis and De Villiers then shifted the balance of the Test as they added 179 for the fourth wicket before Tanvir claimed Kallis.

In the morning, Alviro Petersen was then caught by Misbah-ul-Haq at first slip, giving Tanvir his first Test wicket. Hashim Amla came in to add four, but he then became Tanvir's second victim as he edged a delivery into the gloves of Adnan Akmal. Captain Graeme Smith added a watchful 10 before he edged behind of the same bowler. Sensing the shift in momentum Kallis counterattacked to neutralise the Pakistani surge. He hit nine fours and two sixes before lunch, when he was on 57, although he reined things in a little thereafter, reaching 105 off 142 balls.

De Villiers provided solid support as Pakistan looked short of ideas on how to get another wicket. Tanvir then returned to dismiss Kallis in the first over after tea, bowling him off an inside edge courtesy of a sharp in-cutter.

Abdur Rehman and Umar Gul kept things tight, but De Villiers went to 99 courtesy of four overthrows before bringing up three figures with a nudged single. Ashwell Prince looked in good touch as he added 56 with De Villiers, but the left-hander departed for 32.
