The Indian side opened their World Cup campaign of 2011 in style as they trounced Bangladesh clinically. Once the Indians posted 370 for the loss of 4 wickets it was pretty much one-way traffic for most part of the match. Bangladesh in reply made 283 for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs.

 

Shakib after winning the toss elected to field first keeping in mind the dew factor which comes later in the evening. Sehwag and Tendulkar got off to a blistering start with the Bangladeshi opening bowlers overawed by the occasion. Short balls and half volleys followed and the Indian openers duly cashed in. Sehwag hammered the first ball of ICC World Cup 2011 through covers to set the tone of the innings. With the pacers leaking runs Shakib opted for the spinners and they brought in some control over the proceedings.Tendulkar (28, 29b, 4x4) fell when there was a gross mis-communication between the two batsmen and found themselves at the same end.

 

Gambhir joined Sehwag in the middle and the two without taking much risk collected their runs thus making the Bangladeshi bowlers look impotent. The spinners were milked while the wayward pacers were punished as the duo set the stage for final assault. Gambhir (39, 39b, 3x4) was cleaned up by Mahmudullah by a delivery that kept alarmingly low. His exit brought in Kohli who instead of being carried away by Sehwag's style batted at his own pace. The right-hander paced the innings brilliantly while Sehwag after completing a subdued century went ballistic. Sixes and boundaries followed and once Kohli summed up the pace and bounce of the pitch went after the bowling whenever the opportunity presented itself.

 

At one stage Tendulkar's 200 was well within the sights of Sehwag but hampered by injury the right-hander struggled as the end of the innings approached. Sehwag scored a brilliant 175 before dragging a wide delivery onto his stumps. Kohli completed his fifth ODI century in the final over as India made 370 for 4 in their 50 overs.

 

The Bangladeshi side on the other hand led by a charged up Kayes went after the Indian bowlers from ball number one. Sreesanth felt the brunt of the attack as he was taken apart by Kayes in the third over of the innings as he was taken for 24 runs. Zaheer Khan on the other hand kept things quiet with some excellent bowling before Munaf Patel cleaned up Kayes (34, 29b 7x4) to give Indians first break through.

 

Once the two power-plays were over the boundaries dried up thus the asking rate spiralled out of control. The Indian spinners led by Harbhajan choked the life out of the Bangladeshi innings with some accurate bowling as the batsmen could not find a way to score runs. Harbhajan after some excellent bowling had Siddique (37, 52b, 1x4, 1x6) stumped of a beauty as Dhoni effected a smart piece of stumping. Tamim Iqbal (70, 86b, 3x4, 1x6) made a subdued half-century before Yuvraj snaffled up a brilliant catch at midwicket to end his innings. Shakib (55, 50b, 5x4) tried to lift his side's fortune with a fighting half century but there was nothing he could do as the asking rate went up past the double figure mark. Once the Bangladeshi skipper was dismissed the fight from the home side disappeared.
