The international match between the Gentlemen of Scotland and the Gentlemen of Ireland at Mannofield, Aberdeen, yesterday, had the novelty of being contested on a time-limit basis.
It had been arranged the previous evening, when the Scottish team were victorious by ten wickets in the regular match, that each side would bat two hours yesterday, but as the match was half an hour late in starting, just on the stroke of midday, it was decided to limit the match to an hour and three quarters batting on each side.
Scotland had the same team as on the previous day, but there was a change to the Irish team, M. Sugden being the absentee, and his place being taken by Allan McBain, captain of the Aberdeenshire club.
The feature of the innings was the remarkable bowling of J. Ganly (Leinster), who had seven wickets for 23 runs. With two successive balls he bowled J.S. Farquhar and D.S. Hiddleston. A.C. Douglas, North of Ireland, had one wicket for 5 runs, and E. Ingram, Leinster, one for 41. The top scorer for Scotland was D.A. Mackay with 72, obtained in five minutes less than an hour, and the total included a 6 and eleven 4's. The Clydesdale batsman's reputation as a hitter was enhanced by his performance.
If Ganly's bowling had been the feature of the play at the opening of the match, it was the wicket-keeping of A.R. Simpson which was remarkable while the Irish players were batting. The Gala player stumped no fewer than four of the visitors, and caught other two.
It was the fine display of batting by A.C. Douglas which chiefly enabled Ireland to tie with Scotland's total of 280 when time was called. Bowling for Scotland, W. Nicholson had three wickets for 42 runs, John Kerr two for 20, D. Brown one for 15, Hiddleston one for 52, and Mackay one for 17.(Article: Copyright © 2013 Cricket Scotland http://cricketscotland.com)
