DateLine: 9th March 2026

Bacup Cricket Club is immensely saddened to receive the news of the passing of two highly valued stalwart members, Barry Wilson and Jack Caughey.

Barry was a very highly regarded Lancashire League opening batsman, who entered the First Eleven as a teenager in 1959.

In 1960 he was a regular member of the championship winning team, alongside the fearsome West Indian fast bowler Roy Gilchrist.

His First Eleven career lasted twenty years until 1979, playing 341 matches.

In that time he racked up 5,765 runs, putting him at ninth in the list for most career runs for Bacup.

That total includes three centuries and 17 half centuries.

It has to be remembered that some of these runs were scored against some of the top international bowlers of the era, such as Charlie Griffith and Wes Hall.

Barry was also a member of the 1972 Worsley Cup winning team at East Lancashire, contributing 25 opening the batting and playing alongside one of his favourite professionals Tony Mann.

Barry remained a member after his playing days offering his support as a spectator. He was also a regular visitor to net practice, where he would offer valued advice to young and experienced batsmen alike.

Jack Caughey didn't play cricket, but his service to the club was, nevertheless, immeasurable and greatly appreciated. Jack held the Bowling Club together for many years, taking care of the bowling green and the tea hut with great pride, in addition to spending many hours maintaining cricket machinery.

The contributions of these fine gentlemen to the club are much appreciated and we offer our sincere condolences to their families.
