Lee Goddard had already made his First-class debut for Loughborough UCCE when selected to play for Derbyshire against Durham UCCE in June 2004. However, it was against the higher standard opposition of Hampshire where Goddard really showed his capability, taking 5 catches in their first innings on his championship debut in an assured and competent debut. Despite batting at 7 in the championship and as high as opener in the second XI, it way his lack of runs in this form of the game which probably cost him his contract with Derbyshire, in an era where the Gilchrist effect has filtered to every level of the game. When captain and wicketkeeper Luke Sutton went public with his desire to leave Derbyshire, little time passed before Worcestershires Jamie Pipe was engaged, as little serious thought appeared to have been given to having Goddard as his replacement.
